PEARL YOUTH NEWS - HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM
PEARL Youth News is a web-based journalism course and international youth news service for high school/secondary school students, who aspire to be PEARL Youth Reporters and publish articles on the PEARL Youth News Website. The course places an emphasis on truth and integrity in reporting, with Daniel Pearl serving as a role model. It also provides the students with the opportunity to interact with other student reporters worldwide. Students may register to become PEARL Youth Reporters by successfully completing an online certification course and publishing their first article on the PEARL Youth News website. The certification course aspires to take students beyond media literacy and help them get started as international correspondents by introducing them to the ethics of journalism and reporting techniques, such as writing leads, finding sources and conducting interviews. The class is offered multiple times throughout the year, with the first one to be launched shortly. For further information, visit www.pearlyouthnews.org.

10th ANNUAL DANIEL PEARL WORLD MUSIC DAYS - OCTOBER 1-31, 2011

As we approach the 10th Annual Daniel Pearl World Music Days, we reflect on the power of music in bringing people together and the role of Danny’s legacy in promoting peace and understanding. Each year, we mark Danny’s October 10th birthday with a month-long global network of concerts empowering audiences with a sense of unity, hope and purpose in the common theme of "Harmony for Humanity." In October 2010, a record of 1,644 music events were dedicated in 84 countries. This year, we hope to increase the outreach of this program and invite our friends and supporters to help spread the word and get their personal networks and communities involved!
Led by an Honorary Committee of world-renowned musicians, World Music Days is open to amateurs, professionals, student groups, embassies and religious institutions who register their performances -- whether already planned or specifically organized. This is an effective awareness-raising program, not a fundraiser, which involves making a simple dedication to “Harmony for Humanity” either from the stage or printed in the program.
To register an October performance or learn more about the benefits of this unique initiative, please visit www.danielpearlmusicdays.org.

DANIEL PEARL MEMORIAL STRING INSTRUMENTS
This is the ninth year where talented young musicians are awarded with instruments at the Mark O’Connor String Camp in tribute to Danny. The instruments, crafted by Jonathan Cooper, are loaned to exceptional young musicians each year for one year to memorialize Danny’s vision to promote harmony and unity through music. Last week, Gracie Hays (age 16) from Gulfport, MS and Philip Glen (age 23) from Santa Fe Springs, CA were selected to receive the Daniel Pearl Memorial Violins. This week, additional musicians will be awarded the Daniel Pearl Memorial Cello and the newly crafted Daniel Pearl Memorial Viola at the conclusion of the Berklee Summer String Program.

9th ANNUAL DANIEL PEARL MEMORIAL LECTURE AT UCLA

On February 10, 2011, Leon Wieseltier, literary editor of The New Republic, delivered the 9th Annual Daniel Pearl Memorial Lecture to a full capacity audience at UCLA on the topic “Peace Process or War Process? The Defeat of Reason in the Middle East.” Speaking during a period of transition and uncertainty in the Middle East (on the day President Mubarak resigned,) Wieseltier focused his lecture on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the two-state solution, the concept of nationhood, and presented thought-provoking insights on the current stalemate. He also addressed recent events in Egypt and the Middle East in a lively Q&A session with the audience. Wieseltier concluded the lecture with a moment of hope, stating that peace, while sometimes elusive, is possible. Press coverage and video and audio of the full lecture are available here.
