Dear User20_Placeholder,
As 2010 comes to a close, we would like to share highlights of Daniel Pearl Foundation’s programs and events. Empowered by our son’s spirit and driven by his calling, we continue the struggle to contain the culture of hatred that took Danny’s life.
Journalism, music, and dialogue are our tools - Daniel’s legacy, our strength.
With best wishes for a happy holiday season and new year,
The Pearl Family
Your generous support will enable us to sustain and expand the
scope and impact of these vital programs.

9th ANNUAL DANIEL PEARL WORLD MUSIC DAYS SETS NEW RECORD

In the spirit of Danny's love of music, the Foundation organizes a global network of concerts each October to unite people in the theme of “Harmony for Humanity.” In October 2010, the 9th Annual Daniel Pearl World Music Days inspired dedications at 1,643 concerts in 84 countries, empowering audiences with a sense of unity and purpose. Highlights included performances by Honorary Committee members, U.S. Embassies, foreign embassies, schools, orchestras, festivals, cultural centers, and talented musicians from every genre. President Barack Obama issued a Statement for this month-long event.
"Harmony for Humanity" eStage now features a streaming radio station on Yahoo! Music that broadcasts music by artists who have participated in this program. eStage also features original compositions inspired by Danny, a year-round photo gallery, video page, as well as poetry and lyrics inspired by his legacy.
Recent original compositions dedicated to Daniel Pearl include "Homecoming" by M80 featuring Liz Berlin of Rusted Root, "The Lord Must Have Been Lonely" by Dean Morrison & The Saturday Night Revolution, "Pearl" by Rez Abbasi, and "Izkor" by Gil
Shohat.

DANIEL PEARL MEMORIAL STRING INSTRUMENTS
In 2002, master violin maker Jonathan Cooper crafted a special Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin to carry on Danny’s tradition of connecting people through music. A second violin, crafted by Cooper, was donated by the Samuel Lawrence Foundation in 2005. This year, a cello made by Cooper was donated by Ann Swanson, and R. G. Niederhoffer Capital Management has commissioned a viola from Cooper, completing the Memorial String Quartet, in honor of Daniel Pearl. Each summer these instruments are awarded for a period of one year to talented musicians attending Mark O'Connor's String Camp.
The 2010 Memorial Violin recipients are Jonathan Raveneau and Malachi Provenzano. The inaugural 2010 Memorial Cello recipient is Sarah Chaffee. The past 12 recipients of the Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin are actively promoting the Daniel Pearl World Music Days among their fans and musician friends, and many have dedicated original compositions to Danny.

DANIEL PEARL JOURNALISM FELLOWS PUBLIC DISCUSSION

On August 12, 2010, this year's Daniel Pearl Fellows, Nasry Ahmed Esmat (Egypt), who worked at the Los Angeles Times and ProPublica, and Aoun Sahi (Pakistan), who worked at the Atlanta bureau of The Wall Street Journal, participated in a public discussion on "How America Is Viewed from Abroad." Both Fellows shared their personal experience of their Fellowship and how it has motivated their aspirations as journalists. Nasry is planning to write a book in Arabic on social media and develop a workshop with a journalist syndicate back home. Aoun is contemplating starting a community newspaper and plans to blog at the Jewish Journal to help bridge the conflict between Pakistan and Israel. This annual event is co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Press Club and is moderated by Rob Eshman, Editor in Chief of the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles.

UPDATES ON PAST DANIEL PEARL FELLOWS
Umar Cheema, our 2008 Fellow from Pakistan, was abducted on September 4, 2010; he was tortured and threatened with death if he continued to write against the military or the government. In compliance with the Daniel Pearl Freedom of the Press Act, the State Department intervened on Cheema’s behalf. This highly publicized case encouraged five additional reporters to file police complaints in Pakistan.
Utku Cakirozer, our 2008 Fellow is currently the Bureau Chief of Cumhuriyet, the oldest and most respected newspaper in Turkey. |

5TH ANNUAL DANIEL PEARL MEMORIAL LECTURE AT STANFORD UNIVERSITY

Wolf Blizter, CNN's lead political anchor and anchor of The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, together with David Bohrman, CNN's Senior Vice President of Programming and Washington Bureau Chief, delivered the Fifth Annual Daniel Pearl Memorial Lecture at Stanford University on November 14, 2010. Titled "The War on Terror: From the Headlines to the Back Pages," both speakers provided an overview of shifting trends in public opinion over the past decade using voter exit polls. Video clips, interspersed with behind-the-scenes commentary, offered a compelling glimpse into the public’s concerns as they fluctuated from terrorism to the legitimacy of the Iraq war to the economy.
After the lecture, Stanford students, alumni, and other audience members engaged both speakers with thought-provoking questions. The lecture was co-sponsored by the Daniel Pearl Foundation, the ASSU Speakers Bureau, and Hillel at Stanford.
