MUSIC

8th Annual Daniel Pearl World Music Days Sets a New Record
To counter the hatred that took Danny's life, the Foundation organizes a global network of concerts each October, which unites people in the theme of "Harmony for Humanity." In October 2009, the 8th Annual Daniel Pearl World Music Days reached the largest audience ever, with 1,558 concerts in 79 countries, including performances by Honorary Committee members Sir Elton John, Itzhak Perlman, Herbie Hancock, Matisyahu, Ravi Shankar, Steve Reich and Mark O'Connor. Twenty three U.S. Embassies participated with multicultural programs dedicated to tolerance and humanity. President Obama issued a Statement in support of the 8th Annual Daniel Pearl World Music Days. For more details, please visit our website and photo gallery.

During October, our "Harmony for Humanity" eStage featured a streaming radio station that broadcast music inspired by Danny's legacy, including Danny's own recordings, original compositions honoring his life and mission, music by both Honorary Committee members and the annual Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin winners, and select pieces from World Music Days participants. eStage also features an online gallery of photos, videos, original compositions and poetry inspired by the legacy of Daniel Pearl.

Original compositions dedicated to Daniel Pearl this year include " A Bridge Across" featuring Dolly Parton, Mark O'Connor and the Nashville Symphony, " I Don't Believe In That" by Chip Taylor, " There Are Stars Whose Radiance Is Visible On Earth" by Timothy Brown, " Native" by Alex Bellegarde, and " Danny's Groove" by Jonathan Russell.

JOURNALISM

Daniel Pearl Journalism Fellows Public Discussion
On August 13, 2009, this year's Daniel Pearl Fellows, Shahzada Irfan Ahmed (The News International, Lahore, Pakistan) and Sherine El Madany (The Daily News Egypt, Cairo, Egypt), participated in a public discussion on how America is viewed from abroad and their personal experiences working at the Houston Chronicle and the Los Angeles Times, respectively. This annual event is co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Press Club and moderated by Rob Eshman, Editor in Chief of the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles.

PEARL World Youth News
PEARL - Prepare and Educate Aspiring Reporters for Leadership - is a unique Internet-based student news service, formed in partnership with the International Education and Research Network (iEARN). Through a network of more than 20,000 schools in 125 countries, high school students collaboratively write articles and act as international correspondents for secondary school newspapers around the world. To date, more than 130 students received their PEARL journalism certification and have published articles read worldwide by their peers. The program was expanded in 2009 to provide PEARL reporters with video equipment and an interactive website, which offers an online curriculum that helps teachers integrate journalism into their own classes. To view select articles by PEARL Certified Reporters, please visit www.pearl.iearn.org.

LECTURES AND DIALOGUE

Fourth Annual Daniel Pearl Memorial Lecture at Stanford University
Senator Joseph Lieberman delivered the Fourth Annual Daniel Pearl Memorial Lecture entitled "The End of the War on Terror" at Stanford University on October 18, 2009. The lecture focused on the consequences of Islamist extremism on both western and Muslim countries. "What we are witnessing is not a war between civilizations, as the extremists want us to believe, but a civil war within Islam," the Senator said. Students, teachers, alumni and local residents also engaged the Senator in a challenging question and answer session. This lecture was co-sponsored by the Daniel Pearl Foundation, Stanford University's Office of the President and Office for Religious Life, and Hillel at Stanford. To read the transcript of the lecture, click here.

The 8th Annual Daniel Pearl Memorial Lecture at UCLA will be delivered by Christopher Hitchens on March 3, 2010. Admission is open to the public, and details will be posted on our Events Page soon.

Judea Pearl's Lectures and Op-Eds
Judea Pearl has led public discussions around the country on topics including "Carving a Path for Muslim Jewish Dialogue," "The Ideological War on Terror," and "The Case for Coexistence." His recently published Op-Ed pieces are available here.

TRIBUTES AND AWARDS

Daniel Pearl Freedom of the Press Act
Subsequent to the U.S. House of Representatives passing the Daniel Pearl Freedom of the Press Act on June 10, 2009, Senator Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) introduced the Daniel Pearl Freedom of the Press Act to the Senate on October 1, 2009, where it is currently under consideration by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. This legislation would direct the State Department to include information relating to freedom of the press worldwide in annual country reports on human rights practices. "The right to a free press is a right upon which we all rely. And every time a journalist is kept from doing his or her job, it is each of us whose right is being violated," said Dodd in a floor statement. "This legislation, in turn, will help to shed light on crimes where these brave journalists themselves are the victims."
