MUSIC

7th Annual Daniel Pearl World Music Days Reaches Record Audiences
Using music to promote tolerance and international friendship, the 7th Annual Daniel Pearl World Music Days, October 1-31, 2008, inspired 1,040 concerts in 59 countries, including every state in the U.S. Participating Artists reflected great diversity at youth and interfaith events, as well as performances spanning musical genres from classical and jazz to hip-hop and ethnic world beat. Throughout October, the "Harmony for Humanity'' eStage, a streaming Internet radio station, broadcast music inspired by Danny’s legacy. eStage features Danny’s own recordings, original compositions honoring his life and mission, and music by members of the Honorary Committee, as well as winners of the Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin. A related Multimedia Gallery in the theme of “Harmony for Humanity” is posted on eStage World Music Days website.

In response to requests from musicians who wished to dedicate performances outside the month of October, Daniel Pearl World Music Days has continued to register such performances and designate them as Tribute Events. For a list of the October and year round concerts, visit our Calendar of Events.

World Music Days Highlights
• Among this year’s participating artists were Honorary Committee members Salman Ahmad, Herbie Hancock, Alison Krauss, R.E.M., Tania Libertad, Yefim Bronfman, Ida Haendel, Mark O'Connor, Theodore Bikel, George Pehlivanian and Zubin Mehta, as well as Steve Reich's ''Daniel Variations.” In addition to numerous symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles and the Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin winners, other noted artists included Matisyahu, Dave Koz, Ozomatli, Jason Mraz, Wire, Laurie Anderson, The Kronos Quartet, Kathy Mattea, Michel Camilo, Doug Kershaw, India's Jazz Junction, and Cesaria Evora, to name just a few.
• Using Danny’s legacy as inspiration, World Music Days saw youth, schools, embassies, houses of worship, student organizations and interfaith groups organize specially planned events which expanded the message of "Harmony for Humanity." For highlights of some of these events, please click here.
• Under the championship of Music Professor Jennifer Lane at the University of North Texas, the College of Music dedicated all of its October concerts as part of the Daniel Pearl World Music Days. This month-long project included an EncoUNTers Series Lecture by Judea Pearl, who spoke on "Carving a Dialogue on Words and Music."
• The World Tolerance Organization of Faisalabad, Pakistan, whose mission is to spread Daniel’s message of peace and tolerance, held a World Music Days celebration featuring local pop singers. An extension of this music program included lectures to students about Daniel's mission of promoting interfaith dialogue.

Lectures in Schools and World Music Days Celebration in Faisalabad

• The U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afganistan, initiated by Asma Nemati, organized a concert with local musicians and dedicated it to tolerance and humanity.
• FODfest (Friends of Danny) an annual concert tour led by Danny’s band-mate Todd Mack, expanded to 14 cities on both coasts of the U.S. with more than 250 musicians participating.
• The Daniel Pearl World Music Days Committee in Canada, led by Ron Smith, inspired 71 concerts coast to coast.
• The social impact of World Music Days was recognized by many cultural and civic organizations around the world, whose endorsement enabled our message of hope to reach wide and far. Please read the U.S. Presidential Statement and New York Governor's Proclamation.

Musical Compositions Dedicated to Daniel Pearl in 2008
• Timothy Brown’s choral piece “There Are Stars…”, set to the lyrics of Lord Byron’s Prometheus - premiered at Chapman University on October 26th.
• ''Harmony For Humanity'' production by Stand Out Selector and Poetz4Peace, premiered at the U.S. Embassy in Nicosia, Cyprus, on October 28-30, featuring Haji Mike and Zeki Ali.
• ''For Danny (Parts 1 & 2),'' a composition by Gus Ruchman, was premiered by the SUNY Purchase College Conservatory of Music String Quartet on October 23rd.
• The Alfred Publishing Company commissioned several compositions to be performed annually in high schools during World Music Days. The first, a choral piece by Sally K. Albrecht and Jay Althouse, premiered at Birmingham High School on October 10th.
• A new band arrangement of the Irish song ''Danny Boy'' was dedicated to Daniel Pearl by John O'Reilly and will be published for schools by Alfred Publishing Company.

JOURNALISM
PEARL World Youth News Expands in 2008

During 2008, this unique Internet-based student news service increased the number of certified PEARL reporters to 123 active participants in 19 countries (including new addition Moldova) – enabling international high school students to collaboratively write articles for secondary school newspapers around the world while developing journalistic skills focused on integrity and balance in reporting.

Daniel Pearl Editor Fellow Carries On Karachi/Los Angeles Link
During the Fall, Mahim Maher, then City Editor of the Daily Times in Karachi, an English-language daily, was placed at the Oakland Tribune and the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles. Since leaving the U.S. Mahim has continued to contribute articles to the Jewish Journal on topics such as the Mumbai Bombing and Anti-Semitism in Pakistan.

Public Discussion with Daniel Pearl Journalism Fellows
This annual public event sponsored by the Foundation and the Los Angeles Press Club featured the 2008 Daniel Pearl Journalist fellows from Pakistan, Umar Cheema and Turkey, Utku Çakýrözer. The panel discussion, titled “How America Is Viewed From The Outside,“ was moderated by Rob Eshman, Editor-in-chief of the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles,. See Article and Blog.

LECTURES, DIALOGUES AND AWARDS
Judea Pearl Lectures Nationwide

As president of the Daniel Pearl Foundation, Judea Pearl spoke throughout the country this year on topics ranging from “Carving a Path for Interfaith Dialogue,” “The Ideological War in the Middle East,” to “Being Jewish in the Post 9/11 Era,” and “Israel and Palestine: The Case for Coexistence.” He also has published numerous Op-Ed pieces that have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times and the Jerusalem Post, among others.

On November 18th Dr. Pearl was invited with Condoleezza Rice to make keynote remarks at the American Red Cross Humanitarian Prize ceremony, honoring Dr. Noam Yifrach, Chairman, Magen David Adom Israel, and Mr. Younis Al-Khatib, President of the Palestine Red Crescent, for collaborating to establish an integrated humanitarian response to the needs of Palestinians and Israelis. The Lucifer Effect Author Delivers Annual Daniel Pearl Memorial Lecture at Stanford
On November 10th, Dr. Philip G. Zimbardo Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Stanford, creator of the Stanford Prison Experiment and author of The Lucifer Effect, delivered the 3rd Annual Daniel Pearl Memorial Lecture, ''The Journey from Evil to Heroism: In Honor of Daniel Pearl.'' Dr. Zimbardo provided a glimpse into the psychology behind inducing ordinary people into evil or heroic actions. The standing room only event was co-sponsored by the Daniel Pearl Foundation, Stanford University's Office of the President, Hillel at Stanford, and the Office for Religious Life. Daniel Pearl Award Created For International Investigative Reporting.
The Global Investigative Journalism Conference renamed the former ICIJ Award in honor of Daniel Pearl at its meeting held in Lillehammer, Norway, on September 13th. The first Daniel Pearl Award was given to New York Times writers Walt Bogdanich and Jake Hooker for outstanding international investigative reporting in a series exposing the worldwide pipeline of Chinese consumer products that contain toxic, and sometimes deadly, chemical additives.

The ADL/Moss Family Daniel Pearl Award
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) honored Rabbi Harold M. Schulweis with the Daniel Pearl Award on November 13th. Endowed by Ruth and George Moss, this award is given annually to the person who has made the most positive impact on the image of Jews and Judaism in the Muslim World. Rabbi Schulweis, the spiritual leader of Valley Beth Shalom in Encino, founded the Jewish World Watch in October 2004 to respond to the genocide in Darfur and to human rights abuses worldwide.
